Free Obama butonsMoveOn.org is giving away free Obama buttons by simply giving them your address (the free ones the top one). I submitted my info and buttons should be arriving in a few weeks. They have 2 other buttons for purchasing, but free is easier!

I still personally dig the Obama 008 buttons (“double O8”, the next James Bond) I got from TheMovement008.org so if ya want some extra designer point, go get those!

viewzi

I’ve been playing around with Viewzi.com for a few days and must admit, it’s a visual pleasure to tinker with. There’s zoomii, Searchme, redzee, oskope, and a handful of other sites that intensify the visual sensors, but Viewzi definitely takes the cake in delivering high quality design within their interface and brand.

I could talk about them for some time, so I’ll just point my finger to their site, tell you to type in something like “food” then press enter and move your mouse around everywhere. Also check out their story through Viewzi.tv and their corporate site which isn’t at all corporate.

Speaking of pictures, here are two other interesting sites rethinking full screen picture viewing. Blowup and PictoBrowser.

art center designing minds
A few months back I attended and blogged the “Art Center: Serious Play” conference which I’d highly recommend anyone to attend to get inspired and get serious about playing (working). They just came out with a series of videos about some students pumping out some work! check it out!

“The Art Center of Pasadena, California is linking its upcoming Art Center Design Conference with the launch of Wrap Magazine, the next incarnation of the Fish Wrap publication. The theme for this joint project is “Serious Play,” a term which encompasses all the work done at the Art Center.

In this episode of Designing Minds, eight student illustrators and eight student graphic designers combine their varying skill sets for a common goal. This collaboration sparks innovative concepts and intense connections.

Where the Hell is Matt? (2008) from Matthew Harding on Vimeo.

There once was a guy named Matt who quit his job to travel the world. In each location, he recorded himself dancing like a goofball and made a Youtube Videos that spread like crazzzy. The web world sees it, everyone smiles, and he gets sponsored to do a few more world trips dancing! Apparently he’s made the journey again this year, to dance across the world one adventure at a time, but this time, everyone knows him, hence he not only dances by himself, but with people around the world! Watch this amazing video and smile!!!

Damn! I love this, I’m jealous, I want to travel… keep up the rocking work Matt! I’ll keep watching as I always have cause goofy dances around the world make me smile. Reminds me a bit of the “Global Laugh Session” we had at Pangea Day!

Everyday Edisons pbs show TV aaron tang

Hey all! I’ve got a little secret to spill that I’ve been keeping hush for almost a year! I’m in a TV show and it premieres on PBS today!!!!

The shows called “Everyday Edisons“:
Everybody has a great idea that could change the way we work, the way we live or the way we play. Everyday Edisons documents the development process of 14 inventions and the parallel stories of the people who invented them. Selected from thousands, the 14 Everyday Edisons learn how their extraordinary ideas are taken from a sketch on a napkin to a store shelf.”

Check out the EverydayEdisons.com page or the PBS page. Find out your local PBS air dates and times here. (I’m in the 2nd half of the season but will appear at the beginning I think)

It’s a thrill to be one of the dozen inventors hand picked from thousands to be on the show. This adventure continues a project I invented while at RISD back in 1999 which made the blogsphere rounds in 2004-5.

I’m not sure what to expect nor how the show ends (good or bad) but that’s all part of the fun. It might not be as entertaining as reality TV, but you’ll get to see my goofy serious self!! And no, it’s not like the “other” reality show I’ve been on… this one is much more professional. There is no competition, the US patent office sponsors the show, and they actually spend over a year developing each inventors idea!

I’ll post a few articles that have been published about the show and myself after the jump (fun pictures)! Please watch and let me know how it goes, cause I don’t receive the channels it’s being broadcast on (booo).

LA Silver Lake Ivanhoe lake black balls
Sweet goodness, this rocks! Tossing 400,000 plastic black Caviar like balls into a reservoir with 3 million to follow in an attempt to shade off the reservoirs exposed water from sunlight for the next 4-5 years.

The water needs to be shaded because when sunlight mixes with the bromide and chlorine in Ivanhoe’s water, the carcinogen bromate forms, said Pankaj Parekh, DWP’s director for water quality compliance. Bromide is naturally present in groundwater and chlorine is used to kill bacteria, he said, but sunlight is the final ingredient in the potentially harmful mix.”

Reminds me of the beautiful Sony Bravia Bouncing balls commercial. I want to by a pool of spheres now!

Jan Vormann dispatchwork

“As part of Bocchignano, Italy’s group project “20 Eventi,” Jan Vormann went around town and filled in all the cracks in the walls with painstakingly clicked-together patches made from Lego’s.”

Very cool! Gives off the vibe that entire city buildings are fabricated from Lego’s and their rustic outer layers of mud bricks are breaking off exposing the fun beneath! The hidden Lego lands discovered 😉 . I heart this!

Lots of pics after the jump>

Nick Demarco XS garbage chair

Call it what you want, but I think this is a great idea by student Nick Demarco! Buy this plastic bag/mesh shaped chair, stuff it with dry items you’d be throwing away anyways or what you have too much of, and you have a comfy chair. Take those old shirts, magazines, bottles, stuffed bears, newspapers, etc.

This is a great “Reuse” project. I’ve got a huge pile of old shirts and magazines that would work great for making a snazzy couch! Reminds me a bit of the very expensive yet cool Campana teddy chairs!

Tast.es: Disposable Elements For Catering
Wow! I love it when the ordinary becomes extraordinary. In this instance Tast.es creates “Disposable elements for catering”! I’m not sure the cost on these jewels but every time I pass by cheap ugly paper/plastic plates in the grocery store, I’m going to venture my eyes around for a set of these, especially the sweet soup cups! Plastic at it’s best! Damn this is hot!

Bert Simons paper portraits

First comes the whole pixelation craze then comes Bert Simons with his paper craft portraits which appear as fractal faceted faces in a somewhat eerie way….maybe it’s just how he hangs them like deer heads. Anyhow, very cool visual…Not sure how to do this on my own, but I just might have to upload my face via some 3D program (maybe Blender as he did..it’s free) then print out a cutout mixing it up with the cool illusion of the Gardner Dragon! (that would rock if I could mix these two)

I’ll copy a few of the over here after the jump!
